I want to congratulate Bowdon on the work you are doing to keep your grocery store alive. There was a grocery store that closed in Mountrail County, in the small town of Plaza for awhile. It really hurts the community when people are forced to travel elsewhere for food. In the past year the store was bought and reopened and it has made all the difference for that small community. In your situation it is great how the community is stepping up!

It is so important for us in small towns to pull together. Not having a place to buy groceries is a real problem for us in rural areas. So many of our residents are elderly & no longer drive. Even a few miles creates a big problem. Many years ago Rutland’s cafe closed & the community pitched in & kept it open until someone bought it. Over 40 years later, the cafe is still open & doing fine. Congratulations to the community of Bowdon for coming up with a plan to keep your grocery and meat locker. We know that the effort will be worth it.

Wow, I am impressed by what you are doing with your grocery store. It sounds like the community is coming together to help. Small communities can do a lot if they work together.

I liked this post and the Bismarck Tribune article link. Gackle folks do a ot of shopping in Jamestown. There is a new super Walmart opening in June and I imagine its lure will intoxicating for some. I think we need to do some similar calculating so people really understand that they might not be saving money and in the long run are hurting the local economy. And its only going to get more costly.

Sure makes sense to me to keep the groceries and locker plant local - we are without both and can add $8.00 to a trip to the grocery store with the gas prices where they are at now. I know we are not driving as much as we did last year. The elderly in the small communities are the ones that suffer as they don’t drive - especially out of town. Good Luck!

Glad you had a good session and were able to connect with Lance. Lynette has asked Miner County to send a copy of their original survey to her, many people are interested in adapting it to their community. When she gets that, I’ll make sure it is sent unto you, and that along with Lances’ resources, may help you develop a good assessment tool for Bowdon.
